On November 15, 1966, in Point Pleasant, West Virginia, two young couples drove along Route 62 toward an abandoned TNT area outside town. The publication date of this account follows decades later; the sighting date remains November 15, 1966.
They reported seeing a tall figure standing near a structure of concrete domes left from World War II storage facilities. The figure appeared humanoid. Witnesses described glowing red eyes reflecting in car headlights. Its height was estimated at over two meters.
The car stopped briefly.
The witnesses stated that the figure moved toward the vehicle. They drove away. According to their account, the figure followed, keeping pace with the car at speeds approaching 100 miles per hour. They reported seeing it rise vertically into the air.
In the days that followed, additional sightings were reported in the Point Pleasant area. Descriptions remained consistent in certain details: large wings folded behind the back, red eyes, silent movement.
Local newspapers documented the reports. Law enforcement officers took statements. The creature became known as the Mothman.
On December 15, 1967, the Silver Bridge connecting Point Pleasant to Gallipolis, Ohio collapsed during rush hour traffic. Forty-six people died. Some residents later connected the bridge disaster with earlier sightings, though no official investigation established a link between the two events.
The TNT area remains accessible. The concrete igloos still stand among overgrown brush. The town holds an annual festival commemorating the legend.
