The Tapes of Enfield

By Margaret Hale

On August 31, 1977, in the London borough of Enfield, a single mother reported disturbances inside her council house at 284 Green Street. The publication date of this account follows decades later; the reported events began on August 31, 1977.

Peggy Hodgson stated that knocking sounds came from the walls of her daughter’s bedroom. Police were called. Two officers later reported hearing knocks and observing a chair move across the floor without visible contact.

Over the following months, journalists and investigators visited the residence. Audio recordings were made. Tapes captured knocking sequences responding to questions. A voice, described as hoarse and male, was recorded speaking through eleven-year-old Janet Hodgson.

Witnesses described furniture shifting. Objects were reported thrown across rooms. Photographs taken in 1977 show Janet appearing suspended above her bed. Investigators from the Society for Psychical Research documented interviews and logged dates.

Medical examinations of the children did not identify physical injury consistent with prolonged assault. Skeptics later suggested that some incidents could have involved deliberate actions by the children. Certain investigators acknowledged instances of admitted trickery. Other events remained unexplained within the collected notes.

The disturbances reportedly diminished in 1979. The family continued residing in the house for years afterward.

Audio tapes from 1977 remain archived. Police records confirm attendance on the initial night of August 31. The address remains a residential property.

The reported sounds, movements, and recorded voice are preserved in documentation. No official authority classified the case as supernatural. No definitive natural explanation was formally established in all instances.

The house stands. The recordings remain.
