On the night of May 1, 2023, residents in the northwest valley of Las Vegas, Nevada contacted emergency services after reporting an unusual event above their neighborhood. The call was logged shortly after 11:50 PM. According to the dispatcher transcript later released publicly, a family described seeing a bright object fall from the sky and land somewhere near their backyard.
The report was unusual but not entirely unprecedented. Las Vegas sits beneath busy flight routes and occasionally witnesses meteor activity. Yet the callers described something that did not resemble a distant meteor or aircraft light. They told the dispatcher they saw a luminous object streak across the sky and descend behind nearby houses.
Minutes later, two officers from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department arrived at the location to investigate.
Earlier that evening, another camera had captured a brief flash across the sky. A police body camera worn by one of the responding officers recorded a bright green streak moving rapidly across the horizon. The flash lasted less than a second, leaving a faint trail in the night sky.
When the officers reached the residence that placed the emergency call, several members of the family were waiting outside the house.
Their statements were recorded on body cameras.
The family explained that moments after seeing the object fall from the sky, they heard a loud impact somewhere inside their fenced yard. When they looked over the wall, they believed they saw something moving near their equipment shed.
One of the callers described the figures as tall and thin. Another family member said the shapes appeared larger than a normal person.
According to the statements captured on video, they believed there were two figures standing near a piece of heavy machinery in the backyard. One witness said the eyes of the figures reflected the light from their phone.
The responding officers walked toward the gate leading to the yard. Their cameras recorded the approach as they scanned the dark area behind the house with flashlights.
The backyard contained several parked vehicles, metal equipment, and construction materials. A tall wooden fence enclosed the property on three sides.
The officers spoke with the family for several minutes before stepping into the yard.
The body camera footage shows the officers moving slowly through the area, illuminating the ground and nearby objects with their lights. The yard appeared quiet. No individuals or animals were immediately visible.
However, one of the officers paused briefly and pointed toward the ground near the center of the yard.
There was a circular disturbance in the dirt.
Later photographs taken by investigators showed a faint ring-shaped mark several feet wide. The soil inside the circle appeared slightly compressed compared with the surrounding ground.
The officers examined the area but did not report finding debris or equipment that could explain the mark.
During the search the family remained near the entrance of the yard. Their voices can be heard on the body camera footage describing what they believed they saw earlier. One member repeatedly said the figures had been standing beside a large forklift parked near the fence.
Another said the shapes moved quickly before disappearing behind the equipment.
After several minutes of searching, the officers completed their inspection and returned to speak with the witnesses again.
No individuals were located in the yard.
No signs of forced entry were found along the fence line.
The officers documented the location and collected statements from the family before leaving the residence.
In the days that followed, the body camera footage and emergency call recording were released publicly. The videos spread rapidly across online platforms and news outlets. Some viewers focused on the earlier streak of light recorded by the officer’s camera, noting that it resembled a meteor entering the atmosphere.
Others focused on the testimony of the family and the unexplained circular mark photographed in the yard.
Astronomical organizations later confirmed that a meteor had indeed passed over parts of Nevada and California at approximately the same time the police were responding to the call. Reports from multiple states described a bright green fireball visible in the sky that evening.
The connection between that meteor and the events reported in the Las Vegas backyard remained unclear.
The police department did not announce any further investigation after the initial response.
No additional evidence was recovered from the location.
For the officers involved, the call concluded as a routine response to an unusual report. Their body camera recordings simply documented the statements of the witnesses and the inspection of the property.
For the family who made the call, however, the events of that night remained vivid.
They described a bright object descending from the sky.
A loud impact.
And two tall figures standing silently in their yard.
The neighborhood returned to its normal quiet in the days that followed. Traffic moved through the nearby streets as usual, and the small homes of the valley resumed their nightly routines.
Yet the recordings from that night continue to circulate through archives and video collections, preserving the voices of those who stood beneath the desert sky and tried to describe what they believed had landed behind their home.
